Asset Management Systems ASFINAG (EN)

Vienna, August 2012:

In cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology, ASFINAG's rehabilitation and maintenance management was analyzed and recommendations for further development with regard to an optimal, integrated system for all systems (asset management) based on the state of the art in technology and science have been developed.

Savings potential of around 10 to 15% - with innovative methodological instruments (Picture: ASFINAG)

Project title

Analysis of maintenance and rehabilitation management at ASFINAG - analysis and evaluation of used methods and development potentials

Customer

ASFINAG

Type

Research project

Duration

September 2011 to April 2012 (revisited 2018/19 with data and models from Habilitation)

Partner/Role

Vienna University of Technology - Institute of Transportation with Prof. Blab with project concept and analysis of asset stok and methods being used on pavements, bridges, tunnels and electrical equipment

Project goals

Analysis and evaluation of the applied methods in the maintenance management of the road infrastructure of ASFINAG as well as potential analysis and strategy recommendation.

  • Pavements: Analysis of ASFINAG's pavement management system with presentation of the methodological basis from condition survey and condition assessment to planning, optimization and implementation

  • Bridges: Analysis of the structural bridge management with periodic condition survey, assessment (grades); risk assessment, M&R planning and implementation

  • Tunnel: Analysis of the constructional tunnel management with periodic condition survey, assessment (grades); risk assessment, M&R planning and implementation

  • Electrical equipment: Analysis of inventory and condition recording, risk assessment and retrofitting strategies

Results:

Analysis of general condition distribution and investment environment, group environment and risk management, inventory (systems, traffic, LOS, accident development, expenditure, condition development), maintenance strategies, methods and instruments for superstructure, bridges, tunnels and electrical machinery with summary and recommendation. The following objectives are essential for the further development of the methods and instruments used in the ASFINAG EMS with regard to an optimal, integrated system for all road systems (asset management) based on the state of the art in technology and science:

  • Providing a safe road network

  • Providing a comfortable, reliable road network with high availability

  • Securing the value of fixed assets

  • Economical and appropriate use of resources

  • Taking into account the impact on users, the environment / third parties and the economy

Recommendations are reflected in the implemented maintenance and rehabilitation strategy of ASFINAG until today. A further development of the currently used methods and asset management tools shows a savings potential of at least 10-15% with annual investments of € 500 million in rehabilitation as a basis (see Habilitation Hoffmann)
